Immigration Policy Changes
One area of change is the new administration’s position on immigration. This includes the rescinding of the DHS policy that protected locations like schools and child care centers from being used for immigration enforcement activities.
Immigration law is complex, and while school and TEP leaders are not expected to be experts, understanding federal warrants and knowing your school, staff, and children’s rights can instill confidence. Establishing safe spaces is key to effectively protecting your community.
To help you prepare for these scenarios, we recommend two valuable resources:
- Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP) Safe Spaces Guide: Offers helpful templates for clarifying policies for staff and families.
- Shipman and Goodwin: Provides detailed information on relevant legislation and rules.
Protections for LGBTQ and BIPOC Communities
Additionally, the President has rescinded orders that previously protected LGBTQ and BIPOC students, staff, and families. The Department of Education is also implementing policy changes, though the full impact of these actions remains to be seen. We will continue to monitor these developments and provide updates.
